Statement by Working America Executive Director Karen Nussbaum on President Obama’s State of the Union Speech

January 25, 2012

We applaud President Obama’s announcement last night of the creation of a special unit to investigate the misconduct by Big Banks that plunged millions of working Americans—and the country—into financial collapse. We continue to urge him and state attorneys general to refuse a bad settlement deal around the foreclosure crisis that would cost banks little and do even less to help struggling working families.

In addition, we share many elements of President Obama’s vision of an America that works for everyone; a vision that address devastating income inequality, calls for investment in jobs and infrastructure, proposes tax rules that aren’t skewed to favor the 1%—and more.

We applaud the calls for investment in good, high-paying jobs. We do need a country where everyone plays—and pays—with the same set of rules. We do need to settle the unfinished business of holding Wall Street accountable for its lawlessness.

Fighting for these things is the cause not just of this year, but of our lifetimes.
