In Maine, guerrilla artists hit back against LePage

By ordering the removal of a labor history mural from the Maine Department of Labor, Governor Paul LePage took a nonissue and made it a national story. In an effort to whitewash over his state’s proud tradition of working people, from Rosie the Riveter (a Mainer!) to the country’s first female Secretary of Labor (Frances Perkins, also a Mainer!), more people have seen and heard about the mural than would have been remotely possible if LePage had just let it be.

As an added bonus, LePage’s brutish treatment of artwork has inspired a mini-revolt among Maine’s artists. Take a look at what a band of rogue projectionists did to the state capital building in Augusta:

That was a nice film and interesting projectionist art. I think the film would be better without the heavy drum music and if they had recorded the simple silence of the night – cars passing, Films don’t always have to have hard driving rock music as a soundtrack – sometimes other moods are more relevant.

That was a good attempt. Good thing they were not arrested.
