Make Mitchell Hirsch the Blog Activist of the Year
Last week I asked you to consider voting for Mitchell Hirsch for the CREDO Mobile/Netroots Nation blogger award for blog activist of the year. (Which you can do by texting “Activist Mitchell Hirsch” to 27336.)
Here’s why: Mitchell has accumulated a remarkable record of making economic policy issues accessible to non-wonks. He’s been tireless tracking a number of issues, but most of all unemployment aid extensions, staying on the case through extensions, failed efforts at extensions, attempts to get an extension to the end of the year, on and on. He’s found new ways to talk about the same issue again and again. He’s done informational posts and action alerts, mobilizing people to take action through Main Street and Twitter and even, in at least one case, spurring Working America to send out an action alert via text message.
He’s been featured at Campaign for America’s Future, the United Steelworkers blog, and Congress Matters. He’s had multiple rescued diaries at Daily Kos and at least one recommended diary. In short, in less than a year he’s built a reputation for quality work on issues that matter so much to working people.
What’s more, Mitchell has done this through a difficult time in his life. In June, he wrote about having been unemployed for the previous three months. What’s notable is that he didn’t just discover the need for strong unemployment aid and jobs legislation when he himself needed it. He was already a tireless advocate for those things when he was fully employed.
There are lots of great activists online, some of them people who’d already developed large followings before Mitchell joined Main Street and started blogging under his own name. But Mitchell belongs in the company of the best and best-known of them, and I hope you’ll text “Activist Mitchell Hirsch” to 27336 between now and Saturday at noon PDT so that he can be more widely recognized.

Thank you, Laura – and thank you, readers. I’m honored to have my hat thrown into the ring by you. And I’ve been privileged to have the opportunity to contribute here on Main Street, where I hope I’ve helped inform, educate and activate. My richest reward has been what I have learned through my work and that of my colleagues.
Your recognition and encouragement are deeply appreciated.
(I feel weird – I’d never voted for myself before!)
Thanks.
