Mis-carried away

Loss for words

It is hard to narrow down a story about my boss. I am the only woman working for a man with a 1950s mentality.

I have learned from him why woman should not have purchasing jobs at large companies, and that being in my 30's is getting old if I am going to have children.

But I really think the worst is when I had my miscarriage. After many years of trying. However, I became pregnant but unfortunately there were complications. I missed very little work, a couple hours for ultrasounds, and one day for when they gave me the medication to begin the miscarriage.

When I returned, the owner's son made comments about how I wouldn't be behind in my work if I had not taken time off. Then he told someone how his wife was unexpectedly pregnant and that he wasn't sure he was ready for it.

The icing on the cake came 3 months later when I was leaving for a doctor's appointment. As I walked out the door, the owner said, "I hope it's a boy!" I was shocked, and shaken, since it was right around the time I would have been finding out what gender my child was had I not lost the pregnancy. He didn't leave it there, either. When I got to work the next day, he asked, "So, is it a boy?"

All is well now, though. He recently told me he felt that God wasn't giving me any babies of my own so that I could help mentor other people's children.
