Bereavement

Amy, Florida

I arrived at work 30 minutes early like I do every da. I was waiting to clock in and I received a phone call about 3 minutes prior to time to clock in. My daughter told me my mother had just passed away. So, I clocked in and attempted to work without telling anyone, I just wanted to make it through my work day, but my emotions were up and down so I quietly spoke with my boss and told him what happened. He then asked me if my mother had already passed and I said yes, he in turn said well there is nothing you can do now and you may as well stay and finish helping get the work done and just take the next day or two off. I was astounded and went back to work but about 10 minutes passed and I then informed him I was leaving to go be with my family. When I returned to work about a week later I was disciplined after providing my birth certificate along with my mother's death certificate. I was given a suspension for not maintaining my work schedule by missing days for bereavement purposes.
